Home design, decoration, and renovation can be difficult but also very fun and rewarding. If this is your first home or your first time designing a space, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed because there is so much to do, so many things to think about, and so much cost and work involved. Luckily there are so many resources online and in real life to help you out! One of the biggest struggles people face when trying to design or decorate their home is the desire to be different or unique while still creating a space that is warm, welcoming, and functional. If you are feeling stuck, here are 3 ways to make your home unique.

Textures

Adding different textures, or the illusion of textures, to your  home in any way you can is a fantastic way to make it look and feel different than any other house on your block. Choosing stone materials when creating your dream kitchen for example will help to add textures that differ from the rest of your home which will draw people’s eyes to a certain section of the home. There are many fun things you can do with this, so just try playing around with it!

Colors

Most homes you walk into these days will incorporate muted colors such as beige, off-white, or grey. These are popular color palettes for both the interiors and exteriors of homes. But what if you were to do something less popular and go with a totally wild color for an accent wall, or even a whole small room? Colors don’t have to apply to just paint either. You can go for bold colors when it comes to rug, curtains, furniture, or other types of upholstery too.

Even using striking colors in wall art will help to make a statement in your home and make you stand out among the rest. Consider forgetting everything you know about home design and going with some color choices that just simply make you happy. They may go against the grain and this may be the best thing for you and your home!

Layout

Though there are so many different ways to lay out the interior of your home, most houses you walk into will look very similar or have one of about two or three common layouts. This doesn’t have to be the case, though! Consider putting your bed in a room that is supposed to be the den or office, and instead using the master as your library, workout space, or office.

Or use what is meant to be a walk-in closet as a small office or meditation/yoga space. The possibilities are endless, but just remember that you don’t have to fit into any mold and can layout your home however feels right to you! And the best part is, you can change it later too!

If you want a unique home you might feel like getting there will be an uphill battle, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Play around with the things on this list and make your home as strange and unusual as you are!
